Olympics.... Success or failure...

Growing up I remember watching the Olympics... I remember Mary Lou retain being on the cover of Wheaties, the great Dave and Dan commercials for the decathlon. I remember the opening ceremonies being as big a deal as New Years. Most importantly I remember the World putting aside their differences to express themselves the way the used to, through competition on various playing fields. At 22 while living in Europe I remember thinking a tattoo of the Olympic rings would be a reasonable symbol on my body to express ULTIMATE competition.

I have found myself disappointed this year with the Olympics. Now more than ever the world needs to unite behind great competition. It feels as though from every angle (despite NBC raking in north of $65,000,000) the Olympics have become less important than, well anything. I find myself blogging about my lack of desire to watch as opposed to watching. These are superior athletes, the best at what they do, competing for themselves and their countries without a lot of fans.

so I ask, why do the Rings mean so little... Why now... When they should mean the most do they mean the least. Why can't we stand side by side and stand with great pride when any national anthem is played to honor success. Look at the world, read the newspaper, we need to come together. The Olympics need to allow us to take a step back, a step out of the mountains in afghatnistan, a day of peace in Iraq, a day watching and rooting, not for your favorite athlete, or your country but for the hope that at some point in the future the World will come together and compete, with respect, in peace.

I never did get that tattoo but hope one day I want it again...

good luck
